The Fae stole everything from Wyn. Her home. Her family. Her soul.
Now they want Her help. A murderer for hire, but this mission – kill the Shadow Queen, the boogeyman of the realm – is a suicide mission. At best! If she doesn’t say yes, they’ll steal more of the small family she’s piecemealed together since dragging her ass out of Faerie three years ago.
Guided by a vaguely familiar dark elf, Wyn must traverse the Shadow Court, a barren wasteland with toxic air populated by nightmarish creatures. Faerie warps everything it touches.
Of Ash and Shadow provides a powerhouse introduction to the Triskelion Series by new author Sarah King. It’s been a while since I’ve gotten into a full fantasy plot and Of Ash and Shadow didn’t disappoint. The story is action packed from the beginning and keeps up the pace throughout the entire story and ends in a satisfying finale that promises more from book 2.
The plot stays consistent throughout the story. I didn’t notice any loop holes or have any questions about what was happening. I didn’t need any guides or maps to help me keep track of characters or places. Wyn and her foes are unique and each stand out in their own unique way. There were moments where I didn’t know quite how to feel about Wyn and things she was doing or were happening to her, but I enjoy reading those kind of books that make you question what you see happening.
Overall I give the book a 5 out of 5 stars. I definitely see this working more like a move rather than a TV show. Female fans over the age of 18 who enjoy writers like Holly Black or Emma Bull will love this series. I can’t wait to read more of this series and see where King goes in the future.
