I’m probably going to say something that might shock a lot of people. I’m not a fan of star wars or star trek or any of the science fiction genre, really. I mean I’ve watched the movies and tried to get into it, but it just isn’t my jam. So when one of the first reviews cited Star Wars-like worlds and characters, I was honestly a little nervous about this one. I have to say though, I don’t think the comparison is exactly accurate.

I found that the science fiction part of the story takes a back burner in the plot as the main characters figure out how to deal with their own tribulations after being transported to a new place. Specifically, Ella has some pretty big health issues to deal with that shakes things up as she deals with her diagnoses on a new planet. The characters each feel unique and dynamic in their own right and have their own storylines that weave together in a wonderfully crafted sci-fi fantasy story that goes much further than just the sci-fi jargon.

I will say that the names of the planets and locations were a bit awkward to pronounce and sounded more like gibberish in my head, but that’s a bit average for sci-fi anyway so I mostly blew over those parts. I would definitely pick up book two.

I think this would be a great series for both sci-fi and fantasy lovers alike who fall on the older young adult scale. Mention of cancer and other smaller issues might be a bit too heavy for younger adults.

When frumpy senior citizen Archie goes in search of his missing son in the Spanish Canary Islands, he stumbles upon a higher mission: locating a magical cure for his ailing fourteen-year-old granddaughter, Ella.
